Abstract

A fuel injector assembly (122, 200, 300, 400, 500) is disclosed. The fuel injector assembly (122, 200, 300, 400, 500) comprising: a nozzle (140, 202, 304) defining a nozzle cavity (214) extending about a nozzle (140, 202, 304) axis, the nozzle cavity (214) having a nozzle body, a nozzle neck that narrows from the nozzle body, and a nozzle head extending from the nozzle neck and defining multiple nozzle outlets positioned differently with respect to the nozzle axis; an injector needle (138, 222, 302, 402, 502) disposed in the nozzle cavity (214) and movable along the nozzle axis, the injector needle (138, 222, 302, 402, 502) having a needle body (224), a needle neck (226) that narrows from the needle body (224); and a travel stop (146, 230, 320, 322, 430) configured and positionable to selectively impede movement of the injector needle (138, 222, 302, 402, 502) along the nozzle axis in a direction away from the nozzle head so that the injector needle (138, 222, 302, 402, 502) may translate along the nozzle axis between a first axial position and a second axial position, in the first axial position, the injector needle (138, 222, 302, 402, 502) abuts the travel stop (146, 230, 320, 322, 430) and allows flow to a first of the nozzle outlets, and, in the second axial position, the injector needle (138, 222, 302, 402, 502) is clear of the travel stop (146, 230, 320, 322, 430) and allows flow to a first of the nozzle outlets and a second of the nozzle outlets.
