Abstract

An apparatus (501) for gamut mapping saturated colors to a narrow gamut representation such as Rec. 709 comprising performing at least two iterations of the following calculations:- determine threshold values for the three color components based on two of the iterated color components which are not the color component that the threshold is for: Rthr=kRG*Gt+kRB*Bt;Gthr=kGR*Rt+kGB*Bt;Bthr=kBR*Rt+kBG*Gt; and- performing the following three mapping functions on the input color components: Rout=Rthr+R2lin_i−Rthr/diff_gainifR2lin_i<RthrRout=R2lin_iifR2lin_i>=Rthr;Gout=Gthr+G2lin_i−Gthr/diff_gainifG2lin_i<GthrGout=G2lin_iifG2lin_i>=Ghr;Bout=Bthr+B2lin_i−Bthr/diff_gainifB2lin_i<BthrBout=B2lin_iifB2lin_i>=Bthr; and- setting the three iterated color components for the next iteration equal to the output values of the three mapping functions:Rt = Rout;Gt = Gout;Bt = Bout; andwherein the k coefficients are fixed coefficients depending on the color bases.
