Abstract

An optical measurement device (100) for obtaining optical measurements from a subject sampling region (110), is provided. The optical measurement device includes: at least one optical source (120, 120') configured to generate optical radiation; an optical waveguide (130); an optical splitter (140) or circulator (150); and at least one optical detector (160). The at least one optical source (120, 120') is configured to couple the optical radiation into a proximal end of the optical waveguide (130). The optical splitter (140) or circulator (140) is arranged at a distal end of the optical waveguide (130) and is configured to output at least a portion of the optical radiation for irradiating the subject sampling region (110), and to receive at least a portion of the outputted optical radiation that has irradiated the subject sampling region, and to couple at least a portion of the received portion back into the distal end of the optical waveguide (130). The at least one optical detector (160) is arranged at a proximal end of the optical waveguide (130) and is configured to detect at least a portion of the optical radiation that has returned to the proximal end of the optical waveguide via the distal end of the optical waveguide.
