A method may include obtaining a first 3D model of an upper jaw of a patient using an intraoral scanner and obtaining a second 3D model of the lower jaw of the patient using the intraoral scanner. The method may also include capturing a series of 2D images of the upper and lower jaws of the patient as the patient is moves the upper jaw and lower jaw in dynamic occlusion and processing the captured series of 2D images to identify features associated with the upper jaw of the patient and the lower jaw of the patient. For each 2D image in the captured series of 2D images, the method may include identifying a relative position of the first 3D model and the second 3D model based on alignment of features in the first 3D model and second 3D model with the features identified in the 2D image to generate a series of relative positions of the first 3D model and the second 3D model. The method may also include modeling dynamic occlusion of the upper jaw and the lower jaw of the patient based on the series of relative positions of the first 3D model and the second 3D model. |

An intraoral scanning system includes an intraoral scanner and a computing device. The computing device receives first intraoral scans from the intraoral scanner during an intraoral scanning session; registers the first intraoral scans together based on overlapping features of the plurality of intraoral scans; generates a first three-dimensional (3D) surface based on the first intraoral scans; receives second intraoral scans; determines that the second intraoral scans fail to satisfy one or more registration criteria for registering to at least one of the first intraoral scans or the first 3D surface; generates a second 3D surface based on stitching together the second intraoral scans without interrupting the intraoral scanning session; and outputs the first 3D surface to a first region of a display and the second 3D surface to a second region of the display. The computing device additionally receives third intraoral scans; updates the second 3D surface based on stitching the third intraoral scans to the second 3D surface; determines that the second 3D surface overlaps with the first 3D surface; merges the second 3D surface to the first 3D surface to generate a combined 3D surface; and outputs the combined 3D surface to the display. |
