A surgical stapler includes an anvil channel member, an anvil surface, and a cartridge channel member that releasably couples with the anvil channel member and includes a distal portion that receives a staple cartridge. The stapler further includes first and second latch features. The second latch feature moves between an open position and a closed position in which it engages the first latch feature and fixes the channel members together. A latch lockout member of the stapler is movable between a lockout state in which the lockout member locks the second latch feature in the open position, and a release state in which the lockout member permits the second latch feature to move to the closed position. The latch lockout member is configured to move from the lockout state to the release state in response to being engaged by the first latch feature. |

An ultrasonic device may include an ultrasonic system including a transducer coupled to an ultrasonic blade, A method of delivering energy to the device may include sensing a vessel contacting the blade, identifying that the vessel is calcified, and generating a warning. In some aspects, the method further includes disabling one or more activation functions of the blade. In another aspect, the method further includes generating a message to apply compression to the vessel for a predetermined period, disabling activation functions of the blade during compression, and enabling activation functions after the expiration of the compression period. In yet another aspect, the method includes applying a compressive clamp force to the calcified vessel by driving a clamp arm toward the blade, disabling activation functions of the blade during compression, and enabling the activation functions after adjusting the compressive force. An ultrasonic surgical instrument may effect the method. |

A staple cartridge unit configured for use with a surgical stapler includes a cartridge housing having a deck and a plurality of openings that house staples configured to be driven distally into tissue positioned against the deck. A knife movably disposed within the cartridge housing is configured to be driven distally through the tissue. An anvil arranged distal to the cartridge housing includes an elongate slot and a plurality of staple-forming pockets. A cutting washer is fixed relative to the anvil and includes a cutting portion disposed within the elongate slot of the anvil. The knife is movable distally to cut tissue against the cutting portion. The cutting washer includes a pair of side flanges that extend transversely to the anvil and are configured to cover a gap defined between the anvil and a distal support structure of the surgical stapler in which the staple cartridge unit is received. |

A handheld electromechanical surgical device configured to be operably coupled to a surgical accessory. The device includes a handle assembly that operably supports a plurality of electrically powered motors that are controlled by a processor within the handle assembly. The handle assembly is encased in an outer shell housing. A barrier plate assembly is interposed between the handle assembly the outer shell housing and supports a shaft coupling arrangement for coupling shafts of the powered motors to corresponding portions of the surgical accessory located outside of the outer shell. Sensing arrangements are supported within the handle assembly for monitoring rotation of each of motor drive shaft and communicating with the processor to apply appropriate control signals to the motors. |

The mechanical lockout assembly is configured to switch between at least an unlocked configuration and a locked configuration. In the locked configuration, the handle assembly and the clamp arm assembly are not completely coupled together and the operator is physically prevented from activating the instrument using an operator input feature. In the unlocked configuration, the clamp arm assembly and the shaft assembly are completely coupled together and the operator is able to activate the instrument using the operator input feature. |

A staple retainer for a surgical staple cartridge unit includes a body having first and second body sides configured to be positioned within an aperture defined between an anvil and a deck of the cartridge unit such that the first body side confronts the anvil and the second body side confronts the deck. The second body side is configured to retain staples within openings in the deck. A first protrusion at the first body side is configured to contact the anvil at a first location, and a second protrusion at the first body side is configured to contact the anvil at a second location. The protrusions are configured to resiliently deflect toward the second body side in response to the staple retainer being positioned within the aperture, and are further configured to cooperate with the second body side to maintain a predetermined distance between the anvil and the deck. |
