A surgical stapler includes a body, a shaft assembly, and an end effector at a distal end of the shaft assembly. The end effector is actuatable between an open state for receiving tissue and a closed state for clamping the tissue. A closure system is operable to actuate the end effector from the open state to the closed state. A firing system is operable to actuate the end effector in the closed state to staple the clamped tissue. A firing lockout mechanism is movable between a lockout state that inhibits actuation of the firing system, and a bypass state that permits actuation of the firing system. The firing lockout mechanism is configured to maintain the lockout state until the end effector assumes the closed state, and is further configured to transition from the lockout state to the bypass state in response to the end effector assuming the closed state. |

Zusammenfassung
A fastener cartridge assembly for stapling tissue includes a staple cartridge, fashioned to drive staples through tissue, a plurality of staples and a tissue thickness compensator assembly. The tissue thickness compensator is comprised of a sacrificial compressible layer and a resilient compressible layer. The sacrificial compressible layer is designed such that the resilient compressible layer compresses more easily at low pressures, but the sacrificial compressible layer compresses more easily at high pressures. The resilient compressible layer ensures that thin tissue is compressed when the staples are ejected into the tissue while the sacrificial compressible layer prevents over compression of the tissue. The tissue thickness compensator assembly can therefore be designed to provide a specific deflection-compression curve. |

A surgical stapler includes a first elongate member having a distal portion that supports a plurality of staple-forming pockets, a second elongate member having a distal portion that supports a staple cartridge, and a clamp member movable from an open position to a closed position to releasably clamp the first and second elongate members together. A clamp lockout feature is supported by the first elongate member and is moveable between a lockout position in which the clamp lockout feature prevents closure of the clamp member, and a release position in which the clamp lockout feature permits closure of the clamp member. An actuating feature is supported by the second elongate member and is configured to actuate the clamp lockout feature from the lockout position to the release position in response to approximation of the distal portions of the first and second elongate members. |
