The turbine is arranged downstream from the compressor relative to a flow of first medium. At least one power turbine (46) is operably coupled to the compressor. The at least one power turbine is configured to receive a flow of a second medium, and the flow of second medium includes a cabin discharge air.

The fluid impenetrable walls (16) have a rigid portion (22), a thermally-deformable portion (24), and a thermal heater and/or cooler (26) thermally coupled to the thermally-deformable portion (24). The thermally-deformable portion (24) has a geometrical form that changes in response to changes in temperature of the thermally deformable portion (24). A flow controller (12) receives a signal indicative of a desired flow rate and controls the thermal heater so as to cause the thermally-deformable portion (24) to deform thereby controlling the fluid flow to the desired flow rate.

An environmental control system includes a plurality of inlets (22, 24, 28) for receiving a plurality of mediums including a first medium and a second medium and an outlet for delivering a conditioned flow of the second medium to one or more loads of the aircraft. A ram air circuit (30) includes a ram air shell (32) having at least one heat exchanger (34, 36) positioned therein and a compressing device (40) is arranged in fluid communication with the ram air circuit and the outlet. The compressing device includes a compressor (42) and at least one turbine (44, 46) operably coupled via a shaft. The environmental control system is operable in a first mode and a second mode. In the second mode, a pressure of the second medium output from the compressor is equal to the pressure of the second medium provided to the outlet.
