Abstract

The spot size converter includes a first cladding layer (12), a first core layer (13)and a second core layer (14) arranged side by side on the first cladding layer (12) so as to extend from a first end (10f) which receives/outputs light along a direction from the first end (10f) toward a second end (10g), a third core layer(15) which is disposed on the first cladding layer (12) between the first and second core layers (13,14), is a member different from the first and second core layers (13,14), and extends to the second end (10g) along the direction from the first end (10f) toward the second end (10g), and a second cladding layer (16) disposed on the first, second, and third core layers (13, 14, 15).
