Abstract
Described herein is a low voltage unidirectional electronic bypass element (200) connected across at least one solar cell and operable to allow current to flow in the event that the operation of at least one solar cell is suspended. The bypass element (200) comprises a single field effect transistor (230) connected between first and second terminals (210, 220) which acts as an electronically-controlled switch, and a detection circuit (260) for detecting suspension of the operation of the at least one solar cell and for activating the switch (230) to bypass the at least one solar cell in the event of suspension of its operation. Diodes (250) are connected in parallel with the normally-open switch (230) and which receive current in the event of suspension of operation of the solar cell to trigger operation of the detection circuit (260). The detection circuitry (260) including a charge pump (270), a timer circuit (280), a control generation block (290) and a switch control circuit (300). The switch control circuit (300) generating a control signal for the gate of the switch to activate the switch to close it and to allow current to bypass the at least one solar cell with which the bypass element (200) is associated.
