Abstract

In a steering system, an energy absorbing member (35; 60; 60B) is plastically deformed by being drawn by a drawing shaft (32; 71, 72; 71, 72B) during a secondary collision. A first drawing shaft (32) or a plurality of second drawing shafts (71, 72; 71, 72B) is provided as the drawing shaft (32; 71, 72; 71, 72B). The first drawing shaft (32) or an adjusted shaft (72; 72B) among the second drawing shafts (71, 72; 71, 72B) is driven to change a drawing portion of the first drawing shaft (32) that is engaged with the energy absorbing member (35; 60; 60B) to draw the energy absorbing member (35; 60; 60B) during the secondary collision or to change the number of the second drawing shafts engaged with the energy absorbing member (35; 60; 60B) to draw the energy absorbing member (35; 60; 60B) during the secondary collision such that a shock absorbing load is changed.
