Abstract

Multi-domain liquid crystal display having R, G, B and white (W-) pixels for increased luminance is disclosed. In conventional RGBW-LCDs a colour mismatch exists between the white light transmitted by the white pixel and that resulting from the combination of R, G, B components from the colour pixels (PX(R), PX(G), PX(B)). In order to alleviate that problem in the disclosed device, at least one region of a first colour filter material (230R) is incorporated into the white-pixel (PX(W)) and disposed at at least one of the boundaries between adjacent LC orientation domains (D1-D4). Such domains are defined, for example, by oriented slits or branches in the pixel electrode. The liquid crystal material (3) may have a positive or negative anisotropy and the LCD may also be of the horizontal-electric-field switching type.
