Abstract

A developing device (23) includes an upstream developing roller (23a1) and a downstream developing roller (23a2) disposed opposite the image bearer (21) at first and second developing positions, respectively, and adjacent to each other in a direction of rotation of the image bearer (21). Each of the upstream developing roller (23a1) and the downstream developing roller (23a2) has a most approachable surface (R; Q') that approaches closest to the image bearer (21) and a most withdrawn surface (R'; Q) that withdraws furthest from the image bearer (21). A reference surface point (M) of the image bearer (21) is disposed opposite one of the most approachable surface (R) and the most withdrawn surface (R') of the upstream developing roller (23a1) at the first developing position and opposes the other of the most approachable surface (Q') and the most withdrawn surface (Q) of the downstream developing roller (23a2) at the second developing position.
