Abstract

A method and system for forming a composite laminate (102). A layup plan (117) is generated for laying up a plurality of plies (110) having a plurality of merge zones (150), each ply (124) of the plurality of plies (110) having a corresponding merge zone at which ends of a first plurality of tows (126) for each ply (124) and ends of a second plurality of tows (128) for each ply (124) meet. The locations of the plurality of merge zones (150) are offset relative to each other through a thickness of the composite laminate (102). The plurality of plies (110) is then laid up according to the layup plan (117) to form a composite laminate (102).
