Abstract

A positron emission tomography "PET" apparatus according to an embodiment includes detectors (101) and circuitry. The detectors (101) detect coincident event pairs resulting from annihilation of positrons emitted from a radiation source arranged in a field of view (FOV) of the PET apparatus and include a plurality of processing units. The circuitry performs timing calibration of the PET apparatus by obtaining a relative timing offset within a set of the processing units obtained via the radiation source (50); and calibrating timing offset between the set of processing units using intrinsic radiation, said intrinsic radiation being radiation from decay of radioactive material that is part of the PET apparatus; and determining a total timing offset based on the corrected relative timing offset within the set of processing units and the calibrated timing offset between the set of processing units (101).
