Abstract
An OTDR system (400) for diagnosing a PON comprising an optical line termination or OLT (111), an optical distribution network or ODN (120), and a plurality of optical network units or ONUs (131-13n), comprises:- a transmitter (401) adapted to transmit in the downstream direction at the Raman wavelength of one ONU (13n);- a receiver (402); and- an OTDR manager (403) configured to control the transmitter (401) and receiver (402) to:- transmit a transmitted signal in a first silent time window wherein none of the ONUs (131-13n) is allowed to transmit;- receive a first backscattered signal (501);- transmit the transmitted signal in a second time window wherein the one ONU (13n) is controlled to upstream transmit and no other ONU is allowed to transmit;- receive a second backscattered signal (502); and- subtract the first backscattered signal (501) from the second backscattered signal (502) to obtain a reflectometry measurement (601) for the drop section (14n) of the ODN (120) towards the one ONU (13n).
