Abstract
An apparatus comprises: a preamplification semiconductor optical amplifier, SOA, section (SOA1) configured to receive at a first output a first optical signal transmitted through an optical fiber and to perform preamplification of the first optical signal to generate at a second output an amplified optical signal; a first photodiode (PD) optically connected to a second output of the first SOA section (SOA1) and configured to convert the amplified optical signal into a first electrical signal; a source signal generation SOA section (SOA2) configured to generate an Optical Time Domain Reflectometry, OTDR, source signal through the optical fiber in a direction opposite to the first optical signal; wherein the preamplification SOA section (SOA1) is configured to perform preamplification of an OTDR back-reflected signal received at the first output through the optical fiber in response to the OTDR source signal.
