Abstract

A system for controlling a hybrid electric vehicle include activating, in response to an anticipated subsequent constraint to driving the vehicle (1) in EV mode, a HEV mode in which a motor generator M/G (4) acts as a motor or as a generator in accordance with an assessment of the SOC of a traction battery (33), which assessment is made using an altered version of a group of SOC ranges. The altered version and an unaltered version of the group are the same except that at least one SOC range of the altered version is in the form of what is selected from a group consisting of a SOC range for electrical-generation shortened as compared to its counterpart in the unaltered version, and a SOC range for torque-assist extended as compared to its counterpart in the unaltered version.
