Abstract

A lubricant monitor (10) suitable for use within a low pressure environment comprises a gas-phase sensor (12) operable within a vacuum system (14) to detect at least one chemical compound created as a consequence of lubricant deterioration and to monitor the variation in the quantity of that compound during operation of the vacuum system, and thereby to detect lubricant deterioration before it has detrimental frictional effects. The gas-phase sensor (12) may be a resistive sensor or a work function sensor. For a perfluoropolyether lubricant the detected compound may for example be CF<3>.
