Abstract

The disclosure relates to an automated storage and retrieval system. The system comprises a three-dimensional grid comprising a plurality of storage columns in which a plurality of storage containers are stored one on top of another in vertical stacks, and at least one port through which the storage containers can be transferred into the grid. At least a first storage container of the plurality of storage containers comprises a first side wall and a first side opening in the first side wall. The system further comprises a receiving surface for receiving the first storage container, a first conveying apparatus configured to convey at least a first product item to a first position adjacent to the receiving surface, and a height adjustment mechanism. The height adjustment mechanism is configured to adjust a height of the receiving surface. The height adjustment mechanism is configured to, when the first storage container is positioned on the receiving surface and the at least a first product item is at the first position, position the first side opening beside the at least a first product item. The system further comprises an actuation mechanism configured to move the product item from the first position into the first storage container through the first side opening.
