Abstract

A biometric payment card comprising: a processor (122); a data store (126) for storing cardholder biometric data as part of a biometric reference (130) for use in authorising transactions; a biometric sensor configured to provide a biometric verification result to the processor (122), the biometric matching result being derived from a comparison of cardholder biometric data obtained during a transaction with the biometric reference (130) wherein, for each transaction that the biometric payment card undertakes, the processor is configured to output the biometric verification result to a payment processing network (208) and to output a biometric verification result version number that indicates the encoding format of the biometric verification result.
