Abstract

This disclosure relates to a method for determining feed levels for a gestating gilt or sow. The method comprises: scanning a pig to provide first measurements indicative of a shape of the pig within a first period of time; providing a measured backfat level of the pig indicative of an actual thickness of backfat of the pig within the first period of time; determining a first feed level based at least on the measured backfat level; discharging feed to the pig based on the first feed level; scanning the pig to provide second measurements indicative of a shape of the pig within a second period of time later than the first period of time; comparing the second and first measurements to determine a difference; determining a second feed level based on the measured backfat level and the difference; and discharging feed to the pig based on the second feed level.
