A method for performing a digital signature is disclosed. At least two sharings of a private signature key are provided. A first sharing is shared among a hot node (2) and a first of at least two cold nodes (3), and a second sharing is shared among the hot node (2) and a second of the at least two cold nodes (3). A signing request message is generated, and one of the at least two sharings of the private signature key is selected. The signing request message is provided to the location of the cold node (3) holding key shares of the selected sharing, and to the hot node (2). A first digital signature share is generated, based on the signing request message and the key shares of the selected sharing held by the cold node (3), and a second digital signature share is generated, based on the signing request message and the key shares of the selected sharing held by the hot node (2). A digital signature is generated by combining the first digital signature share and the second digital signature share. |
