Abstract
A sensing device for measuring a flow velocity of a fluid (F), preferably groundwater, in a borehole is provided. The sensing device (1) comprises a heating element (11) configured to emit heat pulses for heating the fluid. The heating element (11) has a diameter Di, and a number N of sensor elements (12) being equidistantly arranged on a virtual circle with a circle diameter D<sub>2</sub> around the heating element (11), wherein each sensor element comprises a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) that is couplable to a light source (301) and to a read-out module (302). The number N of sensor elements (12) is equal to or greater than πD<sub>2</sub>/D<sub>1</sub> and/or the N sensor elements (12) are arranged within a single optical fiber forming a loop with the circle diameter D<sub>2</sub> around the heating element (11).
