Abstract
A method of atomization of powdered feedstock material (104), comprising the following steps, performed simultaneously and/or alternately: the step of subjecting said powdered feedstock material (104) to melting by heating it with a focused heat source (140) to obtain a melt pool (106) of liquid feedstock material (104) on a tip (105) of an ultrasonic element (101); the step of subjecting the melt pool (106) to ultrasonic vibrations by means of the vibrating ultrasonic element (101); the step of feeding the powdered feedstock material (104) to the melt pool (106) in the first stream (114) impinging the melt pool (106) and comprising a carrier gas and the powdered feedstock material (104) suspended in said gas. According to the invention, the ultrasonic element (101) is cooled and in the step of subjecting the melt pool (106) to ultrasonic vibrations, the ultrasonic vibrations are induced in the melt pool (106) by means of the ultrasonic element (101), causing the melt pool material (106) to be ejected as an atomization product (254). The heating profile (514) of the focused heat source (140) and/or the cooling profile of the melt pool (106) and/or the gas blowing profile onto the melt pool (106) and/or the feed rate of the feedstock material (104) are selected so that the melt pool (106) is concave in shape and has two regions, including a shallower region (106a) in which the ultrasonic atomization rate exceeds the feed rate of the feedstock material and a deeper region (106b) in which the feed rate of the feedstock material exceeds the atomization rate. The atomization product (254) ejected from the melt pool (106) is collected using the second gas stream (124). The invention also provides a device (100) for atomization of the powdered feedstock material using the method according to the invention.
