Abstract

Disclosed is a method and apparatus for friction welding. This comprises inserting a first plug member (12) through an aperture (18) in a workpiece (16), the first plug member (12) comprising a main body (20), a plug (22) and a transition section (26) located between the plug and the main body (20), and a first axis (24), applying a first axial force to the first plug member (12) such that the plug (22) thereof is brought into contact with a first surface of the workpiece (16), locating a second plug member (14) comprising a second axis relative to the first plug member (12) and applying a second axial force to the second plug member (14) to bring the second plug member (14) into contact the workpiece (16) and into contact with the transition section (26) of the first plug member (12), the first axial force being opposite to the second axial force, and rotating the first plug member (12) about the respective first axis to provide friction between the first plug member (12) and the workpiece (16).
