Abstract

A tocodynamometer (toco) has a housing configured to be maintained against the abdominal skin of the maternal patient, wherein the housing forms a sealed cavity. A sensing membrane is on a front side of the housing, wherein the sensing membrane is configured to be in contact with the abdominal skin and to deform inward during uterine contractions of the maternal patient. A sensor is located in the sealed cavity of the housing and configured to provide an output based on the inward deformation of the sensing membrane. A processor is within the sealed cavity and configured to receive the output of the sensor and to generate a uterine activity value based thereon. A pressure diffusing membrane is on at least one side of the housing and is configured to expand outward when the sensing membrane deforms inward to mitigate pressure increase within the sealed cavity.
