Abstract

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a melamine-formaldehyde resin composition comprising the steps of: a) Preparing a slurry of melamine in a solution of formaldehyde in water, b) adjusting pH of the slurry in a range between 8.3 and 10.5, c) Reacting the melamine and the formaldehyde in the slurry to form methylolated melamine at a first temperature between 90 and 120°C, d) when the slurry has become a water-clear solution, cooling to a second temperature between 70 and 90°C and holding at that second temperature for condensation of the methylolated melamine forming a melamine formaldehyde resin composition, e) cooling. The invention also relates to a melamine-formaldehyde resin composition obtainable by the process having a residual (free) melamine content below 3 wt.%, to curable melamine-formaldehyde resin composition comprising the melamine-formaldehyde resin composition and a catalyst and various uses thereof.
