Abstract

A sheet conveying device (3) includes a plurality of switching portions (30) each having a plurality of branch paths (30a) configured to branch off from a standard conveying path (2) and a plurality of sheet collection portions(30b) configured to collect sheets at a later stage of the plurality of branch paths (30a); The plurality of switching portions (30) can selectively execute a normal conveying process in which each of a plurality of sheets is conveyed along the standard conveying path (2), and an emergency conveying process in which each of the plurality of sheets is conveyed to each of the plurality of sheet collection portions (30b). The control device (8), when a jam is detected, causes an upstream terminating end switching portion, which is located farthest downstream in the sheet conveying direction among upstream switching portions having a path branching from an area downstream in the sheet conveying direction relative to the jam area, to execute the emergency conveying process, and causes portions other than the upstream terminating end switching portion to execute the normal conveying process or the emergency conveying process.
