Abstract

The proposed embodiments relate to a network node in a mobile communication system, for participating in an overlay network to enforce application-specific policies. The network node, participating in an overlay network to enforce application-specific policies, includes a network interface module for data packet exchange, an underlay plane module for default packet handling and interaction with the overlay plane, and an overlay plane module to manage routing, prioritizing, forwarding, and dropping of packets based on traffic requirements. The proposed embodiments are particularly advantageous when the communication system includes non-terrestrial components, such as satellite communication. The embodiments enable dynamic agreements with satellite operators, reserving limited bandwidth for critical traffic while managing the rest on a pay-as-you-go basis. The proposed overlay abstraction improves responsiveness in adapting application overlay networks to changing requirements. Additionally, these embodiments conceal domain-specific knowledge from service and satellite providers, aligning with privacy demands in industrial business applications.
