Abstract
The proposed embodiments involve monitoring radio signal parameters from candidate access points separating connectivity data from traffic data using distinct links. If a wireless station identifies a second access point with a better signal, an association request may be sent while maintaining the current association. Upon receiving a response, the wireless station may establish a second association. Finally, the station transitions the association from the first to the second access point, thereby completing the roaming. Roaming to the second access point may be suspended until the first link is idle, ensuring seamless connectivity and optimal performance. The disclosed embodiments, as delineated herein, significantly leverage the mechanisms of Distributed Multi-Link Operation and extend these mechanisms to facilitate seamless roaming within Wi-Fi networks. These enhancements are designed to augment performance and reduce roaming latency to below 30 milliseconds, in comparison to existing roaming mechanisms predicated on IEEE 802.11k/r/v standards.
