Abstract

A tooling assembly for forming and curing a composite preform in a single process step and a method of forming and curing the composite preform includes a composite material blank disposed on a platform. The tooling assembly includes a shape memory alloy (SMA) structure incorporated into the platform and configured to move in response to heating which changes a shape of the platform. The SMA structure is disposed in an initial state at a first threshold temperature when unheated and is disposed in a secondary state when heated via a heater to a second threshold temperature. The composite material blank is movable with the platform to a transformed state in response to the SMA structure moving to the secondary state to form and cure the composite material blank into the composite preform relative to the secondary state of the SMA structure.
