Abstract
A multi-speed transmission including a plurality of planetary gearsets and a plurality of selective couplers is coupled to a prime mover through an input coupler. The input coupler may be a mechanical clutch useful modulate a power extraction from the prime mover, where in some forms the prime mover is a constant speed engine. The input coupler is configured to receive hydraulic fluid from the multi-speed transmission to aid in modulating power extraction from the prime mover. The hydraulic fluid is used to move an apply piston of the input coupler, where the apply piston is coupled to and applies pressure to a disk pack of the mechanical clutch. Varying pressure applied from the apply piston to the disk pack aids in modulating power extraction from the constant speed engine. The input coupler may include a balance cavity to aid in offsetting rotation induced pressure rise in a hydraulic fluid.
