Abstract
The invention relates to a method and a device adapted for the selective counting of individual respiratory droplets and particles comprising water within ambient air. The method is based on a planar capacitive sensor to which droplets and particles are led with a nozzle, which increases their velocity. Entering the electric field of the capacitive sensor, the respiratory droplets and particles change the sensor's capacitance. Because the respiratory droplets and particles containing water exhibit a notably distinct dielectric constant compared to other airborne particles and the air itself, they are counted in a selective way independently on other particulate matter air pollutants. The alteration in the capacitance is converted into an electrical signal, which is measured by known methods.
