Abstract

Systems and methods for a discovery process for contention-based ranging, wherein a UWB subsystem of a user device is configured to determine if the short MAC address allocated to the user device has been added to the ranging management list (RML) of an access control device. If the short MAC address has not been added to the RML, the user device generates a different short MAC address that is not present in the RML and responds to the access control device with the different short MAC address. This process repeats until the short MAC address has been added to the RML. If the access control device receives responses from more than one user device having the same short MAC address within the same contention period, the short MAC address will not be added to the RML.
