Abstract
Different aspects of the invention provide a universal monitoring apparatus, and corresponding method, that enables sensing or monitoring of any environmental parameter, no matter what type of backscattering the optical field is subjected to, all signal parameters necessary for estimating all fiber parameters are made available. The invention thus provides a solution that overcomes the complexity, and cost limitations of previous approaches, enabling efficient and non-disruptive environmental monitoring in fiber optic access networks. The monitoring apparatus is completely non-intrusive in the sense that it does not require any modification of the existing optical fiber network, or optical fibers, it is monitoring, as it is simply appended to an existing system and taps into it. The structure of the monitoring apparatus is simple and it allows processing the optical signal speedily, allowing for real-time monitoring of parameters.
