Abstract
A system and method for decarbonizing ammonia production is disclosed. A system may generate a synthesis gas from a hydrocarbon and subsequently produce ammonia from the synthesis gas. The system may include a recuperative reformer for generating a first reformate from the hydrocarbon, and a downstream autothermal reformer for receiving the first reformate and generating a second reformate that can be further processed and synthesized into ammonia. Carbon dioxide emissions associated with producing the ammonia can be reduced by recovering heat in the recuperative reformer and returning recovered heat to the reforming reaction. This can reduce the duty of the recuperative reformer and correspondingly, the required heat output and associated firing of a combustion-based heat source used to provide heat to the recuperative reformer. Hydrogen from an external source can be added to the reformate stream to maintain a desirable hydrogen-to-nitrogen ratio thereof. The hydrogen can be green hydrogen.
