Abstract

An accessory mounting system is attachable to a helmet. The accessory mounting system is operable for positioning an accessory device, for example a display device, for example a heads-up display (HUD) device, in front of an eye of the user. The accessory mounting system includes an accessory assembly including an accessory device, for example a viewing device. The accessory assembly is attachable to a rail with a safety release mechanism that releases the rail from the rail carrier when greater than a threshold amount of force is applied to the rail. An adjustment frame of the accessory assembly is coupled to the rail and is slidable along the rail to position the accessory device. The adjustment frame includes a locking knob with protrusions that engage with compliant protrusions of the rail to selectively position the adjustment frame along the rail and to maintain the adjustment frame in a selected position.
