Abstract

A water based polyurethane dispersion is included herein. The dispersion includes a polymer, the polymer comprising the reaction product of (i). a prepolymer, preferably an isocyanate terminated polyurethane prepolymer, and (ii) an amine compound and/or inorganic base compound in an aqueous based medium. The prepolymer comprises the reaction product of (i) an isocyanate compound having a functionality of at least about 1.8, preferably the isocyanate compound comprises a non-aromatic isocyanate or an aromatic isocyanate; and (ii) a plurality of polyols. The plurality of polyols includes at least a 1<st> polyol having a hydroxyl functionality of more than about 2.5, and a 2<nd> polyol having at least one of a carboxylic acid moiety, a phosphoric acid moiety, or a sulfonic acid moiety or any combination thereof. Also enclosed are methods of making the dispersion, applications for the dispersion, and methods of making the applications of the dispersion.
