Abstract

Systems and methods for reducing the data volume downlinked from a spacecraft to a ground station are disclosed. A processing system onboard the spacecraft captures image data from one or more imaging sensors and forms an image stack of spectral bands that is partitioned into tile stacks corresponding to common spatial regions. A trained artificial intelligence model performs inference on each tile stack to generate a quantitative tile stack score indicative of predicted usefulness for one or more mission objectives. Based on the tile stack scores, the processing system selects for each tile stack a lossless compression action, a lossy compression action, or a discarding action, compresses tile stacks according to the selected actions, assembles compressed tile data into a compressed image data file, and transmits the compressed image data file to the ground station over a downlink communication channel.
