Abstract
An apparatus (10) for determining a linear or angular displacement, comprises a first and a second part (14, 18) which are movable relative to one another, at least, a first periodic code track (100) having a first number (N<sub>1</sub>) of first periods (111) and a second periodic coding track (200) having a second number (N<sub>2</sub>) of second periods (211), a plurality of readout devices (151, 152, 153, 251, 252, 351), each of the readout devices being adapted for reading one corresponding periodic code track and outputting at least one measurement signal (S1 to S6, C1 to C6), and an evaluation unit (40) The evaluation unit (40) comprises a multiplication module (41) configured for generating a product signal (S1S2) by multiplying two measurement signals (S1, C1) of respective readout devices (151, 251), and a filtering module (42) configured for filtering the product signal (S1S2) for generating a displacement signal (D1, D2) and calculating the relative displacement between the first and the second part (14, 18) based on the displacement signal (D1, D2).
