Abstract

Provided is a method for evaluating steel capable of obtaining steel having stable quality by using a new variable for evaluating dimensional change characteristics. A method for evaluating steel includes acquiring a forging ratio when a steel ingot (21) is forged to obtain a forged material (22), acquiring dimensions of a rectangular parallelepiped-shaped sample (40), for the forged material (22), the sample having one side in an extension direction during forging, and calculating a variable related to isotropy of the sample (40) based on the forging ratio and the dimensions. The variable is an isotropy variable. Dimensional change characteristics of samples (40) respectively taken from a plurality of forged materials (22) are actually measured, the isotropy variable is calculated for each sample (40), and a graph using the isotropy variable on a first axis and the dimensional change characteristics on a second axis is output based on the isotropy variable and the dimensional change characteristics.
