Abstract

A video recording system and method for archiving surveillance videos from multiple cameras includes storing video clips in files on a storage medium. The system segments incoming videos into time-ordered clips and stores them in a hierarchical directory structure organized by camera and time period. When storage capacity reaches a threshold, the system identifies older video clips based on age or retention policies, designates their files as recycled files, and moves the recycled files to a recycle directory. As new video clips are captured, they are stored in the recycled files rather than deleting the old files and creating new files. The system supports different retention periods for different cameras.
