The disclosure relates to a method for operating an automated storage and retrieval system comprising a port, the method comprising: presenting, at a first opening of the port, a first storage container with an item therein; presenting, at a second opening of the port, a transfer container, the transfer container having a retractable panel; and receiving, within the transfer container, the item from the first storage container.
