Abstract

An improved surge protection device (1) is provided, the surge protection device (1) having a detection unit (2) for generating a detection signal (d) indicative of the occurrence of an energy rich pulse caused by an electrical surge in an electrical power system (10), a bypass unit (3) with a bypass path (34) to, depending on the detection signal (d), bypass the pulse, and an absorption unit (4) to arrest the pulse after the pulse has been bypassed through the bypass unit (3).
