Abstract

Embodiments of this application provide a communication method, a terminal device, and a chip system, and relate to the field of terminal device communication. The method can improve a call success rate of a terminal device. The method includes: User equipment UE camps on an NR network. The UE receives an operation that is performed by a user on an interface of the UE and that is used to disable a 5G communication capability of the UE. The UE camps on a first LTE cell, and sends a TAU request to the first LTE cell. The UE receives a second operation performed by the user on the interface of the UE, where the second operation is used to enable the 5G communication capability of the UE. When the UE meets a preset condition, the UE camps on a first NR cell, and sends a first registration request to the first NR cell, where the first registration request carries indication information indicating that a registration type is initial registration.
