Abstract

A communication system for communicating in a harsh environment includes a hearing protection headset, with left and right earcups configured to attenuate external sounds. The headset features connector interfaces connected to the earcups, which individually connect a first type of accessory device and/ayer type of accessory device via signal pins. The communication module within the headset applies and switches between a first communication mode (for audio data) and a second communication mode (for non-audio data) based on the connected accessory device. It also connects with a peripheral communication device and enables audio data reception and playback through speakers in the earcups.
