Abstract

An aerosol-generating device for use with aerosol-generating articles of first and second types (30a,b). The device comprises an engagement portion (11) configured to engage an aerosol-generating article having an airflow inlet (16), an airflow sensor (22) arranged to sense a characteristic of an airflow upstream of the airflow inlet of an article when engaged with the device, and a controller (33) operatively connected to the airflow sensor. The controller is configured to identify whether the article engaged with the engagement portion is an article of the first type or an article of the second type based on the sensed characteristic of the airflow.
