Abstract

An endoscope system (1) includes an insertion unit (3) including a sensor (32) at a distal end (34) and being bendable and a control unit (50). The control unit receives a mode signal indicating a mode in which the insertion unit is automatically bent. The control unit acquires data output from the sensor. The control unit determines a gravitational direction (Dg) at the distal end based on the data. The control unit outputs a control signal for bending the insertion unit such that an angle (An) between a forward direction (Dif) of the distal end and the gravitational direction (Dg) increases after the mode signal has been received.
