Abstract
Embodiments herein relate to a battery pack for a portable computing device such as a laptop or other battery-powered device. The battery pack includes one or more key structures that are coded to a chemistry and/or other characteristics of the battery cells within the pack. The key structures can be formed on an exterior surface of the battery package using a rigid material such as plastic. In one approach, the exterior surface comprises a soft-sided material such as aluminum-plastic or Mylar<sup>®</sup>. The key structures can include protrusions and recesses which extend along a length of the battery package. The key structures match corresponding inverse key structures in a battery container so that only a compatible battery can be installed in the container. The key structures can be added to a cylindrical battery, or to a rectangular frame of a pouch or prismatic cell-based battery pack.
