Abstract
ECU identifies the source of abnormal combustion by comparing the timing at which an intake pressure sensor disposed in the intake passage detects a pressure fluctuation associated with abnormal combustion with the timing at which a cylinder pressure sensor disposed in the combustion chamber detects a pressure fluctuation associated with abnormal combustion. When the time difference (T1-T2) between the detection timing of the intake pressure sensor and the detection timing of the cylinder pressure sensor is less than a predetermined threshold (T<sub>inValve</sub>) (Step S8: YES), the ECU determines that the source of abnormal combustion is the intake passage. When the time difference (T1-T2) is greater than the predetermined threshold (T<sub>inValve</sub>), the ECU determines that the source of abnormal combustion is the cylinder (Step S8: NO).
